Local educators have been participating in a one-week (July 10th – 14th) YOU (Youth Opportunities Unlimited) Learn! Educator
Externship Program that immerses them in Coastal Bend careers. Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend’s YOU Initiative has
provided grant funding to Citizens for Educational Excellence to create partnerships among workforce, industry and educators to
develop an effective workforce system by allowing this select group to make the connection between academic skills and the
workplace.

Elementary, middle and high school teachers and counselors will engage in activities through the externship in which they will
learn about skill sets in various career fields and learn how classroom content can be applied in the real world. In addition to
experiencing the daily rigors of occupations in health care, law enforcement and the petrochemical industry, participants toured
the Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend, Coastal Compass Education and Career Resource Center, Port Industries of
Corpus Christi. At the conclusion of the program, educators will use what they have learned to develop lesson plans that will
inform, educate, and allow students to experience a myriad of careers.

Employers participating in the program include the following: City of Corpus Christi, Port Industries, Nueces County Sheriff’s
Department, Refinery Terminal Fire Company, Corpus Christi Police Department, Citgo, Valero, OxyChem, NuStar, Chemours,
Dawood Dental, Star Orthodontics, Children’s Clinic, City of Aransas Pass, City of Kingsville, and Corpus Christi Convention and
Visitors Bureau. Over 35 educators representing 16 Independent School Districts including Aransas County, Banquete, GregoryPortland,
Ingleside, Beeville, Tuloso Midway, Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Sinton and Calallen were required to apply for positions
in the program.
